Can You Quote Dog Clothing from a Photo? What We Need Before Pricing

We receive this type of inquiry quite often:

A buyer sends us a photo of a dog jacket, coat or other pet garment and asks:

“Can you make something like this? How much?”

The short answer is yes. We can usually give an estimated price from a reference photo.

But for custom dog clothing, a photo alone is rarely enough for an accurate final quotation. It shows us what the garment looks like, but not necessarily what fabric is used, how it is constructed, or what functional requirements it needs to meet.

That is why we normally separate the quotation into two stages: an initial estimated price and a final confirmed price.

What We Usually Ask Before Quoting

When we receive a reference photo, we normally start with a few practical questions:

  • What is the estimated order quantity?
  • What size range do you need?
  • What type of fabric do you want?
  • Does the fabric require any special finishing?
  • Are there any functional requirements?
  • Do you have a target price?
  • Do you have an original sample we can check?

Many buyers, especially new pet brands, do not know the exact fabric specification. That is not a problem.

In this situation, we normally look for an existing fabric with a similar appearance, weight and hand feel, and use it as a reference for the first quotation.

We also make it clear that this is an estimated price based on the photo and current assumptions. The final price needs to be confirmed after sampling or after checking an original reference sample.

Why a Photo Cannot Tell Us Everything About the Fabric

Take a padded dog jacket as an example.

From a photo, we may be able to see the color, silhouette and general appearance. But we may not be able to identify:

  • Exact fabric type
  • Fabric weight
  • Fabric construction
  • Water-repellent or other finishing
  • Breathability requirements
  • Other functional performance requirements

Two fabrics can look almost identical in a product photo but have very different specifications and costs.

For example, a buyer may simply ask for a “waterproof fabric.” For a manufacturer, we still need to understand what level of water resistance is expected and whether additional performance requirements are involved.

These details affect both material selection and price.

A Simple-Looking Detail May Not Be Simple to Produce

Fabric is only part of the quotation.

Garment construction can have an equally important effect on production cost.

We once worked on a dog jacket where the back zipper looked quite simple from the outside. But the garment itself had a three-layer construction:

Outer shell + quilted padding + lining

The zipper therefore had to be installed through and coordinated with a much more complicated garment structure.

The zipper itself was not the main cost issue. The additional handling, alignment and sewing time were.

This is a good example of why a detail that looks simple in a photo is not always simple on the sewing line.

A reference photo shows what a garment looks like. It does not always show how the garment is made.

What If You Don't Know the Fabric?

You do not need to know the exact fabric name before contacting a dog clothing manufacturer.

If you only have a reference image, we can first discuss what you expect from the finished product.

For example:

  • Is it mainly for fashion or daily wear?
  • Does it need to keep the dog warm?
  • Does it need water resistance?
  • Should it be lightweight?
  • Do you want a particular surface appearance or hand feel?

Based on these requirements, we can look for a similar available fabric and prepare an estimated quotation.

This is often a more practical starting point than trying to identify an exact fabric from a photograph.

Why an Original Sample Is So Helpful

If you already have a physical sample of the product you want to develop, sending it to the manufacturer is usually the best reference.

With an original sample, we can check details that may be difficult or impossible to identify from photos, including:

  • Actual fabric and hand feel
  • Thickness and layer structure
  • Stitching and seam construction
  • Zipper installation
  • Elastic details
  • Lining and padding
  • Overall workmanship

This becomes especially important for winter jackets, functional dog wear and other garments with more complicated construction.

Estimated Price vs. Final Price

For custom pet apparel, we think it is useful to distinguish between these two stages.

Estimated Price

At the beginning, the quotation may be based on:

Reference photo + quantity + size range + similar fabric + assumed construction

The purpose of this price is to help the buyer understand whether the project is roughly within the expected purchasing budget.

If the price range works, we can continue with material confirmation and sampling.

Final Price

The final quotation is based on more confirmed information:

Approved sample or original sample + confirmed fabric + confirmed construction + customization requirements + final order quantity

At this stage, there are fewer assumptions.

This is why the final price may sometimes differ from the first photo-based quotation. It does not necessarily mean that the same product suddenly became more expensive. In many cases, it means that the actual product specifications and construction have now been confirmed.

What Should You Send for a Faster Quote?

You do not need a complete tech pack to start a custom dog clothing project.

But if possible, send us:

  • Reference photos: front, back, inside and detail photos are especially useful.
  • Estimated quantity: this helps us evaluate suitable production options.
  • Size range: for example XS–2XL or your own sizing system.
  • Fabric requirements: exact specifications if available, or simply describe the look and function you want.
  • Functional requirements: such as warmth or water resistance.
  • Target price: if available, this helps us evaluate whether the proposed material and construction are commercially realistic.
  • Original sample: especially useful for products with complicated construction.

The more information we have, the fewer assumptions we need to make.

A Fast Quote Is Not Always an Accurate Quote

Two manufacturers can receive exactly the same reference photo and still give very different quotations.

One may assume a basic fabric and simple construction. Another may assume a higher-grade fabric, lining, padding or additional finishing.

They appear to be quoting the same product, but in reality they may be pricing two different versions of it.

That is why asking questions before confirming a price is not about making the sourcing process more complicated.

It is about reducing assumptions before production begins.

Have a Dog Clothing Design You Want to Develop?

You don't need to prepare everything before contacting us.

Send RuisPet Wear your reference photo, estimated quantity, size range, fabric or functional requirements, and target price.

If you have an original sample, you can also send it to us for evaluation.

We can first look for a similar available fabric and provide an estimated quotation. After the sample, materials and construction are confirmed, we can then confirm the final production price.
